So I was just reading some old articles in Sports Illustrated’s archives about the marathon, and I came across the story of Kathy Switzer. Maybe I’m just too young, but I had never heard this and I think it’s really cool — especially as a young woman training for her first marathon.

Anyways, I guess Kathy Switzer entered the Boston Marathon in 1967 by completing her form as “K. Switzer” and getting a doctor to waive her mandatory physical exam. She ran with a bunch of guys on the Syracuse track team, including her then-boyfriend Tom Miller. About four miles into the race, the media truck drove by them and the photographers all immediately noticed Kathy, as she had made no effort to conceal her gender. Jock Semple, one of the race’s co-directors known for his short temper, jumped down and attacked Kathy, yelling “Get the hell out of my race and give me that number!” He tried to forcibly remove her from the race until Kathy’s boyfriend Tom (who was also a hammer-thrower at Syracuse) decked him and Kathy, as she puts it, “[ran] like hell.” She finished her first marathon in four hours and twenty minutes, went on to compete in eight more Boston Marathons and even ended up winning the New York marathon in 1974. She also joined the fight for women’s rights in athletics, fighting for women to be allowed into the Boston Marathon. (Hit the jump for more.) (more…)
